Frenectomy Cost
A frenectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove a small band of tissue connecting either the tongue to the floor of the mouth or the lip from the gum tissue. Patients who are tongue or lip tied may have difficulties swallowing and speaking so it is important to treat patients, especially babies who can have trouble nursing.
A frenectomy can be performed with either a scalpel or a soft tissue laser or even an electrocautery tool and is usually done at a dental or oral surgeon’s office. On occasion, an Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon may perform the procedure.
Types of Frenectomy
Labial Frenectomy: A labial frenectomy is the removal of the tissue that connects the lip to the gum tissue. Patients with a shortened frenulum on the lip can have difficulties eating, swallowing, and speaking. The labial frenulum can also cause large gaps and gum recession which can lead to more serious dental problems.
Lingual Frenectomy: A lingual frenectomy is the removal of the tissue that connects the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. A shortened frenulum in the tongue can pose great challenges to patients in the swallowing and speaking. Babies often have a difficult time nursing and do not gain weight. In older children, a shortened lingual frenulum can lead to speech to fax, a bad bite, and trouble swallowing.
How is a frenectomy performed?
For older patients, a local anesthetic is administered at the site being treated and either a scalpel or a soft tissue laser is used to remove the band of tissue impeding the patient. In younger patients, some form of sedative may be administered such as nitrous oxide or an oral sedative. A soft tissue laser is often the preferred method since it is quick, does not require any sutures, and has a shorter recovery time.
How much does a frenectomy cost?
Cost of treatment can vary according to the amount of tissue being removed, its location, and the technology being utilized. The experience of the doctor will also play a role in the overall cost of treatment. A frenectomy may start around $795.
