Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) in Rockford, Dixon, Janesville, and Madison

LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a tissue-preserving, regenerative treatment option that offers patients an effective and less painful alternative to traditional surgical approaches. LANAP can be used to treat a variety of issues, including removal of tissue buildup, relieving localized hemostasis, crown lengthening procedures, frenectomies, and biopsies. In addition to these procedures, LANAP is the only FDA-approved treatment option that uses lasers to treat periodontal disease. LANAP has become an increasingly popular treatment option because it results in less swelling, sensitivity, bleeding, and pain, and reduces your risk of developing post-operative infections.

With over 60,000 dental surgeries performed and over 20,000 dental implants placed, you can be confident that you will receive high quality care from established professionals that is designed to meet your unique needs. What to Do Leading Up to the LANAP Procedure

Prior to your LANAP procedure, it will be necessary to perform diagnostic exams to determine the extent of your periodontal disease. Once this is determined and your appointment for LANAP has been scheduled, we recommend reducing or eliminating salt intake for one to two weeks leading up to the procedure, as doing so will help reduce swelling. If you are having dental sedation as part of your treatment, avoid eating or drinking for six hours before your appointment, excepting for necessary prescription medications, which can be taken for water. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home following the procedure.

What to Expect During the LANAP Procedure

Prior to performing the LANAP procedure, a local anesthetic will be administered along with dental sedation if necessary. Following this, a tiny laser fiber is inserted between your gum and teeth that emits a small amount energy, which effectively removes tissue that has become infected at the cellular level and reduces bacteria that develops as a result of periodontal disease. Following this, calculus that has formed on the surfaces of the teeth are removed with an ultrasonic cleaning instrument, after which the laser is used one last time to create a seal around the teeth and gums. LANAP treatment is typically performed in one visit under sedation but can be done in 2 sessions treating one half of the mouth at a time.

Aftercare Following LANAP

Following your LANAP procedure, it is common to experience some soreness and discomfort. If you follow these and any additional post-operative instructions provided by your periodontist, you will reduce risk of complications, minimize post-procedural pain and discomfort, and significantly reduce the time it takes to fully recover.

  • Hygiene: Following the LANAP procedure, you will notice that the tissue around your teeth appears to be discolored. This discoloration is a thin fibrin that is protecting your gums and allowing them to attach to your teeth. The most important aftercare instruction to follow after having LANAP performed is to not pick at or brush this fibrin barrier for the first 7 to 14 days. You may continue to use mouthwash two to three times daily and can resume soft brushing once you have passed the 10 to 14-day mark. Do not floss, use an electric toothbrush, or an oral irrigator until after your first cleaning.
  • Medication: It is common to experience mild soreness following the LANAP procedure. This can generally be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medication, such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil. If post-procedural pain proves to be inadequate, contact our office to discuss prescription pain medication options.
  • Antibiotics: If you are prescribed antibiotics following the LANAP procedure, take as directed until the prescription is gone.
  • Diet: Immediately following your LANAP procedure, avoid eating meat, food with seeds, and/or hard or crunchy foods, such as nuts, chips, cookies, hard candy, etc. Stick to liquids for the first 4-6 hours to allow for clotting to occur. Following this initial healing period, you may begin reintroducing soft foods, such as scrambled eggs, yogurt, or soup. You should plan on sticking to a soft food for approximately one week, or until post-procedural pain is gone.
