What to Expect During the Bar Attachment Dentures Process
Prior to placement of bar attachment dentures, we will conduct an in-depth dental and medical health history review in to determine the underlying reason why bar attachment dentures are necessary. This process will include an examination of your bite and for any indications of loose teeth, bone loss, TMJ, oral cancer, or signs of periodontal disease.
Once the underlying cause has been identified and it is determined that bar attachment dentures are the appropriate treatment option for you, it will be necessary to take diagnostic exams (CT scan and X-Rays) to determine the precise placement of the implants. Once the optimal locations are marked, the procedure will begin with administration of a local anesthetic and/or sedation. Following this, the implants are strategically placed in your gums to ensure maximal stability and strength. Once the implants are properly positioned, you will begin the healing process, during which the implants fully integrate with the jawbone (osseointegration). During this period, temporary teeth will be placed to reduce your risk of developing an infection and allow you to preserve a full, healthy smile.
Once this fusion is complete, a bar is placed on the implants, which will connect the teeth to the bar attachment. Once in place, we will evaluate the overall fit and aesthetic appearance and ensure that it will provide you with optimal support. If it is determined that the bar attachment dentures meet these criteria, the process will be complete, and you can begin to enjoy your bright, new, full healthy smile.
Aftercare Following Bar Attachment Dentures
Following the surgical placement of bar attachment dentures, it is essential to follow these and any additional post-operative instructions provided by your periodontist to minimize risks and enjoy a fast recovery.
- To reduce pain or discomfort, take the recommended dosage of prescribed painkillers and/or over-the counter medication.
- Avoid vigorous mouth rinsing and do not touch the wound
- Bleeding can be controlled using gauze
- To reduce swelling, apply an ice bag over the area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time.
- Do not spit, rinse, or use a straw for the first 24 hours.
- Avoid intense physical activity and rest as much as possible for the first week
- Avoid brushing your teeth for the first 24 hours, after which you can resume gentle brushing. You can resume flossing your natural teeth after this period, but do not floss the dental implant. Moving forward, you should consider alternative flossing options for your dental implants, such as interdental brushes or oral irrigation.
- Eat soft foods such as applesauce, yogurt, pudding, or soup for the first ten days and slowly reintroduce harder foods as the healing process progresses.
By following these instructions and continuing to keep your teeth and gums clean, you will enjoy a fast healing process and can return to your normal routine as quickly as possible.
