What to Expect During the All-on-4 Process

Prior to starting any All-on-4 Dental Implant procedure, we will first conduct an in-depth dental and medical health history review to determine your personal underlying reason why tooth replacement is necessary. This evaluation will include an examination of your bite and for any indications of TMY, bone loss, loose teeth, oral cancer, or the signs of periodontal disease. Once we are comfortably identified the underlying cause and we collectively determine that All-on-4 Dental Implant is indeed the appropriate treatment option for you, it will be then be imperative to take diagnostic exams (such as a CT scan and X-Rays) to ensure you have sufficient jawbone density and to also determine the exact placement of the implant posts.

Once we have confirmed the optimal locations, the procedure will begin with the administration of a local anesthetic to numb the soft tissue and/or sedation for your additional comfort if necessary. Next, any unhealthy or loose teeth will be extracted. Following this, the four titanium posts are surgically placed in your jawbone. Once these posts are strategically positioned, it may take a few months for them to fully integrate with the jawbone (osseointegration), or to fuse to the jawbone. During this period, temporary dentures are fabricated allowing you some normalcy during the fusing process.

Once the jawbone has fully fused with the titanium posts, your permanent set of dentures will snap on to extensions we add to the posts. Following this final placement, we will evaluate the overall fit and aesthetic appearance. After this, the All-on-4 process will be complete, and you can begin to enjoy your new, healthy smile. Since the posts now act as roots you enjoy natural stability through biting, chewing, speaking, and smiling.

Aftercare Following All-on-4 Dental Implants

Following the surgical placement of your All-on-4 Dental Implants, it is important to follow these and any additional post-operative instructions provided by our team to both minimize risks and to enjoy a fast and healthy recovery.

  • To reduce swelling, apply an ice bag over the area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time.
  • To reduce pain or discomfort, take the recommended dosage of prescribed painkillers and/or over-the counter medication.
  • Do not spit, rinse, or use a straw for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid brushing your teeth for the first 24 hours, after which you can resume gentle brushing.
  • Avoid intense physical activity and rest as much as possible for the first 24 hours.
  • Eat soft foods such as applesauce, yogurt, pudding, or soup for the first two weeks and then slowly reintroduce harder foods as the healing process progresses.

By following these instructions and continuing to exercise good oral hygiene at home, you will enjoy a fast healing process and can return to your normal routine as quickly as possible.
