Implant Supported Dentures in Janesville

Often times patients who have standard dentures become frustrated with their limitations, and find them to be to be inconvenient, unstable, and uncomfortable. Traditional dentures also require a great deal of maintenance and can even limit the types of foods patients can enjoy. Fortunately, continued advancements in dental technology provide patients with more effective, longer-lasting solutions. Implant supported dentures are a very safe and effective treatment option for patients who seek a replacement for their missing natural teeth and/or for patients who are dissatisfied with their current dentures.

Implant supported dentures not only provide a more natural feeling and natural looking correction for lost teeth but they will also restore you back to full functionality. They will preserve the health of your surrounding teeth and reduce your risk of developing any additional oral health issues. Because they are embedded in your jawbone, implant supported dentures eliminates the slipping of traditional dentures and adhesive. Implant supported dentures can designed to be removable or fixed into place, and they can support various fixed prostheses, ranging from a single crown to All-on-4 dental implants.

What to Expect During the Implant Supported Dentures Process

Prior to performing the placement of implant supported dentures, our team will conduct an in-depth dental and medical health history review to determine the real reason why implant supported dentures are necessary. This review will include an examination of your bite and for any indications of loose teeth, bone loss, oral cancer, TMJ, or signs of periodontal or gum disease.

Once we have identified the underlying cause and it is determined that implant supported dentures are indeed the appropriate treatment option for you, the next step is to take diagnostic exams (CT scan and X-Rays) to determine the precise placement of the implant and the number of implants necessary (typically 2 to 6). Once this is decided and the optimal locations are marked, the actual procedure will begin with administration of a local anesthetic and/or sedation. Sometimes, if necessary, this will be followed by the extraction of any teeth that need to be removed. Next, small titanium posts are surgically and strategically placed in your jawbone. Once these posts are properly positioned, the next step is to wait for several months for those posts to grow into or fully integrate with the jawbone (osseointegration). During this short period, temporary dentures will be placed to reduce your risk of developing any infection and allow you to continue to preserve a healthy smile.

As soon as your jawbone has completed fused with the dental implant(s), the newly fabricated implant supported denture from the dental lab is placed on the posts. This is done with nylon snaps on the back side of the denture tray. They snap and lock on to the titanium post extensions preventing any slippage. Once in place, we will evaluate together the overall fit and aesthetic appearance to ensure it achieves the goals and provides you with optimal functional support. If we determine together that the implant supported dentures meets these criteria, the process will be complete, and you can begin to enjoy your bright, new, full healthy smile.

Aftercare Following Implant Supported Dentures

Following the surgical placement of your implants, it is essential to follow these and any additional post-operative instructions provided by our team to minimize risks and enjoy a fast recovery.

  • To reduce pain or discomfort, take the recommended dosage of prescribed painkillers and/or over-the counter medication.
  • To reduce swelling, apply an ice bag over the area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time.
  • Avoid intense physical activity and rest as much as possible for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid brushing your teeth for the first 24 hours, after which you can resume gentle brushing. You can resume flossing your natural teeth after this period, but do not floss the dental implant. Moving forward, you should consider alternative flossing options for your dental implants, such as interdental brushes or oral irrigation.
  • Do not spit, rinse, or use a straw for the first 24 hours.
  • Eat soft foods such as soup, applesauce, yogurt, or pudding, for the first two weeks and slowly reintroduce harder foods as the healing process progresses.
  • Be sure to continue cleaning your dentures daily and maintaining good oral hygiene habits for your remaining teeth.

By following these simple instructions and continuing to keep your teeth and gums clean, you will enjoy a quick healing process and can return to your normal routine as soon as possible.
