CROWN LENGTHENING in Rockford, Dixon, Janesville, and Madison

Crown lengthening and shortening is a common procedure that may be performed to correct cosmetic issues, such as a gummy smile, or in preparation of other restorative periodontal procedures, such as dental crowns. The crown lengthening or shortening procedure involves recontouring the gum line by removing small amounts of tissue in order to expose more natural tooth. By removing gum tissue and realigning your gum line, more tooth will be visible, which creates an improved balance between your teeth and gums, resulting in a healthy, full, natural-looking smile. Removal of this tissue also makes it possible for your periodontist to address decay that has developed prior to placement of a dental crown.

With over 60,000 dental surgeries performed and over 20,000 dental implants placed, you can be confident that you will receive high quality care from established professionals that is designed to meet your unique needs. What to Expect During the Crown Lengthening and Shortening Procedure

Prior to performing the crown lengthening and shortening procedure, we will conduct an in-depth dental and medical health history review to determine the underlying reason why crown lengthening and shortening is necessary. This process will include an examination of your bite and for any indications of loose teeth, bone loss, TMJ, oral cancer, or signs of periodontal disease.

Once the underlying cause has been identified and it is determined that crown lengthening and shortening is the appropriate treatment option for you, the procedure will begin with administration of a local anesthetic and/or sedation. Following this, we will begin making a series of incisions at the gum line in order to separate the teeth and gums. When crown lengthening is performed in preparation of dental restoration placement, it may be necessary to modify the underlying bone to allow for proper placement of a crown. Once the exposed roots and bones are reduced, we will contour the surrounding teeth by removing tissue until enough tooth is visible and the desired gumline is achieved. Finally, we will review the aesthetic appearance of your new gumline and place sutures over the area, after which the procedure will be complete.

Crown lengthening and shortening can typically be completed in one hour, though surgery may take longer if bone needs to be removed and/or how many teeth are being treated.

Aftercare Following Crown Lengthening and Shortening

Recovery time following a crown lengthening and shortening procedure typically takes between 1-2 weeks or faster, depending upon the severity of your case. Patients who receive heavier sedation following the procedure may experience some grogginess, but this should go away after a few hours. Following your crown lengthening and shortening procedure, it will be necessary to wear bandages to reduce your risk of develop infections. In addition to wearing these bandages after your crown lengthening and shortening procedure, it is essential to follow these, and any additional post-operative instructions provided by your periodontist to minimize risks and enjoy a fast recovery.

  • To reduce pain or discomfort, take the recommended dosage of prescribed painkillers and/or over-the counter medication.
  • To reduce swelling, apply an ice bag over the area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time.
  • Do not spit, rinse, or use a straw for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid intense physical activity and rest as much as possible for the first 24 hours.
  • Eat soft foods such as applesauce, yogurt, pudding, or soup for the first two weeks and slowly reintroduce harder foods as the healing process progresses.
  • Continue practicing good oral hygiene habits and scheduling regular periodontal exams to reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.

By following these instructions and continuing to keep your teeth and gums clean, you will enjoy a fast healing process and can return to your normal routine as quickly as possible.
