Implant Supported Dentures in Rockford

Many patients who have traditional dentures soon become frustrated with their faults and limitations, and find them to be to be unstable, inconvenient, and uncomfortable. Standard dentures also demand a great deal of maintenance and can notably limit the types of foods patients can enjoy. Fortunately for us all, advancements in dental technology now provide patients with more effective, long-lasting solutions. The Implant supported dentures are a very safe and more effective treatment option for patients who have lost most or all their teeth and/or for patients who have become disenchanted with their current dentures.

Implant supported dentures actually provide a more natural feeling and a more natural looking correction for lost teeth and will restore your bite, your chewing and your speech back to full functionality, preserve the health of your surrounding teeth, and even reduce your risk of developing oral health issues. Because the titanium posts are embedded in your jawbone acting as roots, the implant supported dentures eliminate slipping and are far more secure. These implant supported dentures can be designed to be either removable or fixed into place, and can support various fixed prostheses, ranging from a single crown to an All-on-4 dental implant.

What to Expect During the Implant Supported Dentures Process

Before we even begin the placement of implant supported dentures, we must conduct an in-depth dental and medical health history review to determine what the underlying reason might be for even needing implant supported dentures. This process will include an examination of your bite and to look for any indications of loose teeth, TMJ, bone loss, oral cancer, or any signs of periodontal disease.

Once the underlying cause has been identified and clarified  and we determine that implant supported dentures are indeed an appropriate treatment option for you, it will be next be necessary to take diagnostic exams (CT scan and X-Rays) to establish the precise placement of the implants and the number of implants necessary (typically 2 to 6) to support your new dentures. Once this is decided and the optimal locations are marked, the procedure will then begin with administration of a local anesthetic and an additional sedation if necessary. If by chance any teeth need to be extracted that follows the numbing process. Next, the titanium posts are surgically and strategically placed into your jawbone. Once these posts are properly positioned the first step is completed and we will need to wait for several months for those posts to grow into and fully integrate with jawbone (osseointegration). During this waiting period, a set of temporary dentures will be placed to reduce your risk of developing any infection and allow you continue to enjoy your smile.

As soon as the jawbone has fully fused with the dental implant(s), the newly fabricated implant supported denture from a dental lab is placed. These dentures are designed with nylon snaps on the back side of the denture tray. These snaps lock on to the titanium post extensions which prevents any slippage. Once in place, we will evaluate the actual overall fit and the aesthetic appearance to both confirm it matches aesthetically and provides you with optimal functional support. If it is then determined that the new implant meets these criteria, the implant supported denture process will be completed, and you can begin to enjoy your new, full healthy smile.

Aftercare Following Implant Supported Dentures

After the surgical placement of your implant supported dentures, it is important to follow these and any additional post-operative instructions provided by our team to minimize any unnecessary risks and to enjoy a fast recovery.

  • To reduce swelling, apply an ice bag over the area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time.
  • To reduce pain or discomfort, take the recommended dosage of prescribed painkillers and/or over-the counter medication.
  • Avoid any intense physical activity and rest as much as possible for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid brushing your teeth for the first 24 hours, after which you can resume gentle brushing. You can resume flossing your natural teeth after this period also, but do not floss the dental implant. Moving forward, you might consider alternative flossing options for your dental implants, such as interdental brushes or oral irrigation.
  • Do not spit, rinse, or use a straw for the first 24 hours.
  • Eat soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce, soup, or pudding, for the first two weeks and slowly reintroduce harder foods as the healing process progresses.
  • If your dentures are designed to be removed, be sure to continue cleaning them daily and maintaining good oral hygiene habits for your remaining teeth.

By simply following these instructions and continuing to keep your gums and teeth clean, you will enjoy a fast healing process and will be returning to your normal routine as quickly as possible.
