Tooth Socket Preservation in Rockford, Dixon, Janesville, and Madison

Although the loss or extraction of a tooth is never ideal, there are times when tooth extraction is either unavoidable or will provide the best possible outcome for your case. Teeth may need to be extracted for a variety of reasons, such as teeth that have become excessively decayed or damaged or teeth that have become infected. Tooth extraction may also be performed due to overcrowding or for patients who have hyperdontia (additional teeth than what is normal). One of the most common tooth extractions that occur are the removal of wisdom teeth, which are typically removed when the patient reaches the ages of 17-25. Children who are getting fitted for braces may also require teeth to be extracted in order to make room for their teeth to grow in straight.

Regardless of the reason, once a tooth has been extracted or lost, there is a small hole or socket where the tooth was. The moment a tooth is removed from this socket, the surrounding bone begins to degenerate, which can eventually result in significant loss of bone material that will prevent the placement of a dental implant and cause surrounding teeth to move out of alignment. To help prevent this from happening, many periodontists will perform socket preservation following a tooth extraction. Socket preservation involves placing a bone graft in the socket to preserve the structural integrity of your jawbone. Tooth socket preservation also reduces your risk of developing a dry socket, which can form when the nerve beneath the healing area is exposed.

What to Expect During the Tooth Socket Preservation Process

Prior to performing a tooth socket preservation procedure, we will conduct an in-depth dental and medical health history review and perform a thorough examination to measure your bite and look for signs of loose teeth, bone loss, TMJ, oral cancer screening, and other signs of periodontal disease.

The tooth socket preservation process is typically preceded by the extraction of a tooth. Tooth extraction typically begins with administration of a local anesthetic and/or sedation. Following this, dental tools are used to elevate the tooth from the socket. Once elevated, forceps are used to grasp and pull the tooth. Once the tooth is extracted, the tooth socket preservation process will begin with placement of the graft in the socket. Once properly positioned, a collagen membrane is placed on top of the graft and the area is either left exposed or sutured shut. Though not always the case, many times a tooth extraction will be followed with the placement of a dental implant or dental implants. The dental implant process will typically be performed on a separate dental visit to allow the area of the tooth extraction to heal.

Aftercare Following Tooth Socket Preservation

The healing process following a tooth extraction and tooth socket preservation typically takes between 7-10 days. To minimize post-procedural risks and ensure a speedy recovery, follow these and any additional post-operative instructions provided by your periodontist.

  • Leave the gauze pad in place for three to four hours.
  • To reduce pain or discomfort, take the recommended dosage of prescribed painkillers and/or over-the counter medication.
  • To reduce swelling, apply an ice bag over the area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time.
  • Do not spit, rinse, or use a straw for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid intense physical activity and rest as much as possible for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid brushing your teeth for the first 24 hours, but resume normal brushing and flossing following this time period, being careful to avoid the extraction site when you do.
  • Eat soft foods, such as applesauce, yogurt, pudding, or soup for the first week.

If you follow these general guidelines and any additional post-operative instructions provided, you should enjoy a quick recovery process
