Although most primary and permanent teeth erupt naturally, some teeth remain trapped beneath the gum tissue or bone. In these cases, a tooth exposure procedure may be recommended to help guide the impacted tooth into its proper position.

Treatment varies depending on the tooth’s location and position but often involves creating space with orthodontic treatment, surgically exposing the tooth, and attaching a small bracket and chain so it can be gradually moved into place. Without treatment, an impacted tooth may contribute to infection, cyst formation, damage to nearby teeth, gum disease, or problems with tooth alignment.

Early loss or prolonged retention of primary canine
Tooth bud abnormally positioned

Dr. Lindman is a native of Rockford. Dr. Lindman received his professional degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry. His graduate training in periodontics was completed at Northwestern University College of Dentistry Where he received a Certificate Degree in Periodontics and a Master of Science degree.

What to Expect During the Tooth Exposure Procedure

Diagnostic exams such as X-Rays or Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) will be performed to determine the position of your impacted tooth and whether the tooth is impacted buccally or palatally, and to determine which surgical technique is necessary. Once this is determined, the tooth exposure process typically begins with administration of a local anesthetic and/or sedation. Following this, gum tissue is removed to expose the tooth. If there is a baby tooth present, it will be removed. Otherwise, a bracket with a small chain is placed over the tooth, and the process of moving your tooth to the proper space can begin. Once properly positioned, the gums are sewn shut, leaving just enough room for the chain to be accessible through the gum. After this appointment, your orthodontist will attach a rubber band to the chain and gently pull the tooth to the proper position. This is a very gradual process that may take up to one year to complete, but it is necessary to move slowly, as the goal is to encourage the tooth to erupt, not to be extracted. You will schedule a follow-up appointment approximately one to two weeks following this procedure.

Once the tooth has moved to the desired position, a final evaluation of your gums will be conducted to ensure they are strong and healthy. If it is determined that your gums are not sufficiently strong and healthy, it may be necessary to perform minor gum surgery in order to support the gums. Otherwise, your tooth exposure process will be complete, and you can begin to enjoy a bright, full, healthy smile.

Aftercare Following Tooth Exposure

To minimize post-procedural risks and ensure a speedy recovery, follow these and any additional post-operative instructions provided by your periodontist.

To reduce pain or discomfort, take the recommended dosage of prescribed painkillers and/or over-the-counter medication.
Avoid disturbing the wound.
To reduce bleeding, apply a gauze pad over the wound for approximately 30 minutes, replacing the gauze as needed. Contact our office if the bleeding does not stop.
To reduce swelling, apply an ice bag over the area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time.
Maintain good oral hygiene by thoroughly brushing your mouth after every meal and rinsing with warm salt water several times throughout the day.
Avoid intense physical activity and rest as much as possible.
Begin with a liquid diet and slowly advance to soft foods, such as applesauce, yogurt, pudding, or soup, returning to a normal diet as soon as you can.

If you follow these general guidelines and any additional post-operative instructions provided, you should enjoy a quick recovery process.

The cost of tooth exposure will depend on several factors, such as whether dental sedation is used, how many visits are required to complete the procedure, any additional procedures that need to be performed, and your dental insurance plan. At Featherstone Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, we are committed to providing you with high-quality, comprehensive periodontal services, which is why we provide you with flexible payment options to ensure that you receive the care you require.

If you are covered under a dental insurance plan, we do ask that you bring your insurance cards and any necessary forms with you to your appointment. We are happy to provide a pre-estimate of dental benefits prior to treatment, and will submit any receipts, forms, or other information required by your insurance company. Once insurance payment has been received, the remaining balance will be mailed to you.

Please note: our office does offer a 5% reduction in fee for full payment at the time services are provided (contingent on treatment type). We also offer extended payment plans through GreenSky Patient Solutions or CareCredit. For your convenience, we accept cash, personal check, Visa, Discover, MasterCard, or American Express.
