Mini Dental Implants in Rockford, Dixon, Janesville, and Madison
Mini dental implants are smaller and narrower than conventional dental implants. They are most commonly used to stabilize dentures, although they may also support certain crowns or other restorations in carefully selected cases.
Because mini implants require less bone and are placed using a less invasive procedure, they may be an option for patients who do not have enough jawbone for traditional implants or who are not ideal candidates for more extensive surgery. Their smaller size may also reduce or eliminate the need for bone grafting.
In many cases, mini dental implants can be placed during a single appointment using local anesthesia. The procedure often requires smaller incisions and may not require sutures, which can lead to less discomfort and a shorter recovery. However, treatment time and suitability will depend on the patient’s oral health, bone structure, and restoration needs.
With over 60,000 dental surgeries performed and over 20,000 dental implants placed, you can be confident that you will receive high-quality care from established professionals that is designed to meet your unique needs. What to Expect During the Mini Dental Implant Process
Prior to performing the placement of mini dental implants, we will conduct an in-depth dental and medical health history review to determine the underlying reason why a mini dental implant is necessary. This process will include an examination of your bite and for any indications of loose teeth, bone loss, TMJ, oral cancer, or signs of periodontal disease.
Once the underlying cause has been identified and it is determined that mini dental implants are the appropriate treatment option for you, it will be necessary to take diagnostic exams (CT scan and X-Rays) to determine the precise placement of the implant. Once the optimal locations are marked, the procedure will begin with administration of a local anesthetic and/or sedation. Following this, a pilot drill is used to create a small hole in the tissue through which the mini dental implants are placed, with the heads of the implants protruding from the gum tissue. Once properly placed and sufficiently tightened, the new tooth is secured in place. After examining the implant to ensure the fit and bite are correct, the procedure will be complete.

Aftercare Following Mini Dental Implants
Unlike traditional dental implants, the recovery time involved following the placement of mini dental implants is significantly reduced. All the same, following the surgical placement of your mini dental implant(s), it is essential to follow these and any additional post-operative instructions provided by your periodontist to minimize risks and enjoy a fast recovery.
- To reduce pain or discomfort, take the recommended dosage of prescribed painkillers and/or over-the-counter medication.
- Avoid disturbing the wound.
- To reduce swelling, apply an ice bag over the area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time.
- Do not spit, rinse, or use a straw for the first 24 hours.
- Avoid intense physical activity and rest as much as possible for the first 24 hours.
- Avoid brushing your teeth for the first 24 hours, after which you can resume gentle brushing. You can resume flossing your natural teeth after this period, but do not floss the mini dental implant. Moving forward, you should consider alternative flossing options for your dental implants, such as interdental brushes or oral irrigation.
- Eat soft foods such as applesauce, yogurt, pudding, or soup for the first week and slowly reintroduce harder foods as the healing process progresses.
By following these instructions and continuing to keep your teeth and gums clean, you will enjoy a fast healing process and can return to your normal routine as quickly as possible.
