Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery in Rockford, Dixon, Janesville, and Madison
Patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their smile may benefit from cosmetic periodontal surgery. A couple of common procedures for the correction of a gummy smile are crown lengthening or gum contouring. These procedures reshape the gumline by removing small amounts of excess tissue to expose more of the natural tooth. This creates a more balanced proportion between the teeth and gums, resulting in a fuller, more natural-looking smile.
Crown lengthening may also be performed for restorative purposes. By exposing more of the tooth, the periodontist can access decay or create enough tooth structure to support the placement of a dental crown.
With over 60,000 dental surgeries performed and over 20,000 dental implants placed, you can be confident that you will receive high-quality care from established professionals that is designed to meet your unique needs. What Type of Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery is Right for Me?
Every patient has unique needs and personal goals for the aesthetic appearance of their smile. We are committed to conducting a thorough examination to determine what cosmetic periodontal surgeries are a good fit for you, not only to help you achieve your cosmetic goals, but to do so in a way that best supports your overall periodontal health.
To support you in these efforts, we provide the following cosmetic periodontal procedures:
- Crown Lengthening: An efficient method of balancing the ratio of your gums and teeth by removing a sufficient amount of gum tissue, which shortens your gums and makes your teeth look longer.
- Soft tissue graft: Gum recession, tooth roots, and other unattractive features of your smile can easily be corrected with a soft tissue graft.
- Bone Grafting: The loss of your natural teeth not only impacts the aesthetic appearance of your smile, but your overall oral health. Once a tooth has been missing for long enough, the jawbone begins to deteriorate, resulting in the patient appearing to be older than they are. A dental bone graft is an effective method for creating enough jawbone to allow for placement of a dental implant, returning patients to their full, bright, healthy natural smile.
What to Expect During the Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery Process
Prior to performing the cosmetic periodontal surgery procedure, we will conduct an in-depth dental and medical health history review to determine the underlying reason why cosmetic periodontal surgery is necessary. This process will include an examination of your bite and for any indications of loose teeth, bone loss, TMJ, oral cancer, or signs of periodontal disease.
Once the underlying cause has been identified and it is determined that cosmetic periodontal surgery is the appropriate treatment option for you, the cosmetic periodontal surgery procedure will typically begin with administration of a local anesthetic and/or sedation. Patients who require sedation as part of this procedure should avoid eating or drinking for at least six hours prior to surgery, except for prescription medication, which can be taken with water. Once you are sufficiently numbed, the cosmetic periodontal surgery will be performed.

Aftercare Following Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery
Following your cosmetic periodontal surgery, it is essential to follow these and any additional post-operative instructions provided by your periodontist to minimize risks and enjoy a fast recovery.
- To reduce pain or discomfort, take the recommended dosage of prescribed painkillers and/or over-the-counter medication.
- To reduce swelling, apply an ice bag over the area for ten to fifteen minutes at a time.
- Do not spit, rinse, or use a straw for the first 24 hours.
- Avoid intense physical activity and rest as much as possible for the first 24 hours.
- Eat soft foods such as applesauce, yogurt, pudding, or soup for the first two weeks and slowly reintroduce harder foods as the healing process progresses.
- Continue practicing good oral hygiene habits and scheduling regular periodontal exams to reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.
By following these instructions and continuing to keep your teeth and gums clean, you will enjoy a fast healing process and can return to your normal routine as quickly as possible.
Cost of Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery
The cost of cosmetic periodontal surgery varies depending on several factors, including the type of procedure performed and whether dental sedation is used. Because these treatments are often considered cosmetic, they may not be covered by your dental insurance plan.
We ask that you bring your insurance card and any necessary forms to your appointment. Our team is happy to provide a pre-estimate of dental benefits before treatment and submit the required receipts, forms, and documentation to your insurance provider. Once any insurance payment has been received, you will be billed for the remaining balance.
At Featherstone Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, we are committed to making high-quality periodontal care as accessible as possible. We offer extended payment plans through GreenSky Patient Solutions and CareCredit. Depending on the type of treatment, patients may also receive a 5% fee reduction when payment is made in full at the time services are provided.
For your convenience, we accept cash, personal checks, Visa, Discover, Mastercard, and American Express.
