Laser Gum Bleaching

Hyperpigmentation in gum tissue can be a result of certain medications, periodontal disease, underlying medical conditions, amalgam restorations, or as is most often the case, genetics. Patients with African or Middle Eastern ancestry often have darker gum tissue because of their natural melanin production. Smoking can also cause gum tissue to darken overtime. Laser gum bleaching is a quick procedure utilized to remove darkened gum tissue.

What is laser gum bleaching?

Laser gum bleaching is a cosmetic treatment that targets melanocytes (cells responsible for producing melanin) in the gamma tissue to remove discoloration and decrease the rate of melanin production. Depending on the size and depth of dark patches being treated, most treatments can be completed in one visit lasting between 20 minutes and one hour. Results are immediate and patients leave with healthy, pink gums!

What is the procedure for laser gum bleaching?

First things first, a consultation is in order! It is important to assess your gum tissue and understand why you have dark patches before receiving treatment. Patients with underlying issues that cause dark patches will not have permanent results with laser gum bleaching.

If it is determined that you are a candidate for gum bleaching, an anesthetic is administered to the areas being treated to numb the tissue and keep you comfortable during the procedure. A handheld laser is focused on the dark areas on your gum tissue and works to vaporize the affected tissue, revealing lighter tissue underneath.

Laser gum depigmentation can provide an affordable option to care for your smile and give you confidence!

How long does it take to heal after laser gum bleaching?

Results are immediate but the healing time can take up to four weeks. Patients can resume normal daily habits the day after their procedure but it is important to remember that your mouth will be tender and your gum tissue inflamed so a soft food diet is advisable for the first few days. Your provider will give you postoperative instructions to make sure you get the best results possible.

Minor discomfort and swelling is normal after laser gum bleaching but it is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain medication like Tylenol or Advil.

Laser gum bleaching is considered a permanent solution and can last 20 to 25 years, even a lifetime. Keep in mind that each patient is different and results will vary depending on the cause of your hyperpigmentation. Some patients with deep discoloration may need multiple sessions to achieve their desired results.

Not everyone is a candidate for laser gum bleaching so it is important to understand the process and expected results after your consultation. If your gum discoloration is due to an underlying condition, that will need to be addressed before your gums are treated.
